SPACE AND MATERIALITY

Today’s class commenced with reviewing our trial prototypes based on the abstract hand sketches. We also tries some more models which fave us the understanding of different materials and its components. My main material was terracotta clay which which was easy to mould but difficult to dry . As and when it dried extreme cracks appeared giving it a messy look. Similar way many materials were explored and used which helped us understand its feasibility.

This abstract model of hand signifies a sense of direction. It is initially inspired from a wave which moves the same direction but the other fingers pointing in opposite direction changed the visuals. It looks more like a snake. It is made of teracotta clay with the help of moulding techniques and cutter. It took 5 days to dry perfectly into a hard rock kind of texture.

This illustration looks like a butterfly but is a hand grip which portrays the essence of holding tightly in the palm. This is mainly made using wires and is being shaped accordingly.Dividing in shapes it is wrapped in a cotton printed cloth which gave it volume. With the help of staples the cloth was attached to the wires. This model required extreme patience and accuracy in oder to get the right visuals.

This is a pot and the feather. Then clay pot is the main hand fist which signifies someone holding a pen. The feather on top is just an add on to the abstract design.First the wires were shaped and each layers pearls and stones were woven into it . After the feather was ready the pot was moulded and shaped with objects. The clay had to be wet in order for the feather to stand inside it.The clay pot before the wired feather was baked in an OTG at 150 degree Celsius for 20 minutes on baking mode. Then it was cooled down and the feather was placed. First and aluminium bowl on which ceramic tile and a butter paper was placed , then the pot and again an aluminium vessel was placed. This whole process was done after researching which resulted in lesser cracks and a fine finish with the clay being firmer and dryer.

This is the same wave design created with a wire and tape.It gave more of an wavy effect and also helped us understand the masking tape which gave it mass and structure. It is a weak structure but communicates the essence of the abstract design.

This is the same butterfly structure which previously created with wire and cloth now was experimented with Terracotta clay. This was made in three parts . Starting from wing which was dried and cut with a cutter in an accurate shape. Same with other wing. Then the head was moulded and cut giving this model a perfect 3 dimensional illusion. This prototype was a balanced shape which helped it to stand easily.
