SPACE AND MATERIALITY

21/09/2019

This class was a review class of our final project. It started alphabetically where we had to present our coasters and final prototype. The review started with our classmates showcasing different abstract sketches and hand grips .Then showing their trial prototypes where we understood different materials and their applicability of the shape. We even learned about balancing and weights and various alternatives. The most important part as a learning ahead is that ,’a design shouldn’t be altered according to the materials but the material should be changed as per the design. ‘After each presentation was a peer review and a feedback session. There were sharp prototypes , landscape, foam sheets , copper pipes and even different shapes and the way they were balanced gave us a deeper practical knowledge .

Starting with my project which was based on three abstract a feather pot, butterfly and wave as summarised below.

I started explaining my review with my trial prototypes where i explored various materials. Some models failed and even many broke. Even learning to use various tools for the wire like hammer , plyer . With help of power point presentation I gave a visual summary of obstacles, learning and conclusion.

This was my final prototype. It is made out of clay , golden wire and pearls. Giving the wavy effect and maintaining the size was a big challenge. This model initially started as a wave in one direction, then it moved on to a big part turning opposite side giving an illusion of snake. But these abstract wasn’t the idea i connected to .

Hence, i illustrated my prototype as an individual . I divided the model in three parts using wires and pearls. Starting with past (black pearl and golden wire area )which has a dark part or an incident that changes us as a person. Everyone has their own story . Present which is wavy ( as the center of the model), confusing, infuriating and annoying .But what holds a human together is a better tomorrow with a little light of hope( presented with shiny white pearls depicting light of life ). But future is a probability. Present is what we should live for and cherish, enjoy it .Because ,‘we don’t know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory.’Therefore with a little hope , lots of confusion and remembering good memories always overpower the bad ones (as shown in the prototype where the golden wires;the good memories dominate the bad parts like the wires are controlling the black pearls.) we should keep moving forward in life .

The base is actually my support of life . It is an African symbol known as Tabono traditionally . It is literally derived from oars. It depicts; strength , confidence , persistence and hard work .It supports my model as a strong base and the symbol itself supports the meaning of an individual. My review was mainly about the trial prototype of feather which seemed different from the sketch . But mainly i was delighted to know how my prototype helped my peers connect deeply and inspire each one and myself including to a motivational life .This project helped me self introspect myself and understand materials, abstraction a hand into a feasible prototype with a deep core meaning.
